Exit pupil and focal ratio: matching an eyepiece to your telescope
Exit pupil and focal ratio are the two numbers that tell you whether an eyepiece is a sensible match for a given telescope, beyond just the magnification it delivers.
What exit pupil is
The exit pupil is the width of the beam of light leaving the eyepiece and entering your eye. It equals the telescope aperture divided by the magnification. An 8 inch, 203 millimetre telescope at 100 times has an exit pupil of about 2 millimetres, because 203 divided by 100 is roughly 2.
You can also find it by dividing the eyepiece focal length by the telescope focal ratio. A 20 millimetre eyepiece on an f/5 telescope gives a 4 millimetre exit pupil, because 20 divided by 5 is 4.
Why exit pupil matters
A dark-adapted adult eye pupil opens to roughly 5 to 7 millimetres. If the exit pupil is wider than your eye pupil, light spills around your iris and is wasted, which sets the lowest useful magnification. If the exit pupil is very small, below about half a millimetre, the image is dim and floaters in your eye become obtrusive, setting a practical high-power limit.
So a comfortable range of exit pupils, roughly half a millimetre to five or so millimetres, brackets the eyepiece focal lengths worth owning for a given telescope.
Focal ratio and eyepiece choice
Focal ratio is the focal length divided by the aperture, written as an f-number. A fast telescope, around f/4 to f/5, has a short focal length for its aperture and demands well-corrected eyepieces, because simple designs show aberrations at the edge of the field at fast ratios. A slow telescope, around f/8 to f/10, is forgiving and works well even with simple eyepiece designs.
This is why budget Plossl eyepieces perform beautifully in a slow Schmidt-Cassegrain but show edge softness in a fast Newtonian, where a more corrected design earns its cost.
Putting it together
To choose an eyepiece, check two things. First, does the resulting magnification give an exit pupil in the comfortable range for that telescope. Second, is the eyepiece design good enough for the telescope's focal ratio. An eyepiece that passes both is a genuine match rather than merely one that physically fits the focuser.
