Observing Jupiter through a telescope

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun, and the largest in the Solar System. It is a gas giant with a mass nearly 2.5 times that of all the other planets in the Solar System combined and slightly less than one-thousandth the mass of the Sun.

What Jupiter is

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun, and the largest in the Solar System. It is a gas giant with a mass nearly 2.5 times that of all the other planets in the Solar System combined and slightly less than one-thousandth the mass of the Sun. The diameter of Jupiter is 11 times that of Earth and a tenth that of the Sun. It orbits the Sun at a distance of 5.20 AU (778.5 Gm), with an orbital period of 11.86 years. Jupiter is the third-brightest natural object in the Earth's night sky, after the Moon and Venus, and has been observed since prehistoric times. Its name derives from that of Jupiter, the chief deity of ancient Roman religion.

Observing Jupiter through a telescope

Jupiter is the richest planet for a small telescope. Its cloud belts, the Great Red Spot and the dance of its four bright Galilean moons are visible even at modest aperture, and change from night to night.

Planets and the Moon reward higher magnification than deep-sky objects, but only up to what the air will allow: on a turbulent night the image boils and less power shows more. Magnification is your telescope's focal length divided by your eyepiece's focal length, so a shorter eyepiece gives more power.
